Frequently Asked Questions
How do fillers work?
They fill in a space that is relatively deflated. The mechanism of action of the filler product and its properties determine the naturalness of the final look and the duration of effectiveness.
The most common filler type at present in the USA is Hyaluronic Acid (HA). The HA fillers attract water and swell, much like a sponge. Some have elasticity; others have none. Some are more stiff for lifting tissue; others are very soft and pliable for treating shallow lines and lips.
The mechanism of action of the Biostimulatory, Regenerative fillers, which are gaining momentum in their use in the USA, is to trigger your body to produce more natural tissue (such as collagen and elastin) to approach amounts you had when younger.
What are examples of fillers?
Examples of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) fillers are RHA products, Evolysse products, Restylane products (eg. Restylane-L, Kysse, Lyft, Defyne, Refyne, Contour), Juvederm products (eg. Voluma, Volbella, Juvederm Plus), and Versa. Examples of Biostimulatory, Regenerative fillers are Radiesse, Sculptra, BellaFill, AlloClae/DermaClae, and PRP.
What are pros, cons, advantages, and disadvantages of one filler type over another?
They differ in their mechanism of action, which determines the side effects. They differ in their onset of action time, duration of action, likelihood of developing a nodule (lump), and effect on skin quality and elasticity.
What are specific advantages of Biostimulatory, Regenerative fillers over HA fillers?
Biostimulatory fillers tend to give a more natural look, improve the quality of skin in collagen and elastin content, have less likelihood of a nodule (ie.lump or bump) form, and last longer. Also, Biostimulatory, Regenerative Fillers are significantly less likely to develop a vascular occlusion, which can result in tissue death and/or blindness. Biostimulatory , Regenerative fillers do not migrate, as can happen with some HA fillers, and Biostimulatory, Regenerative fillers do not cause the “stretch effect” to the dermis that HA fillers can (especially with repeat injection in the same area with HA fillers). Biostimulatory, regenerative fillers do not migrate into muscle, as HA fillers can. Biostimulatory, regenerative fillers do not cause the Tyndall effect (a purplish appearance to the skin) that HA fillers can.
What are the disadvantages of Biostimulatory, Regenerative fillers vs. HA fillers?
They take longer to see the peak results and last longer before going away. Getting rid of lumps or bumps from them also takes longer than those associated with HA fillers.
Why Face&Mane?
We offer a choice of superb, experienced, vetted injectors, tested for their artistic abilities and injectables knowledge, assisted by AI to ensure safety, precision and consistency in your results every time. This brings a customized approach to the convenience of your home in a safe and efficient way.
What things does Face&Mane do to reduce risks of injury to me?
Face&Mane takes matters of patient safety and compliance seriously!
Our injectors are tested in readiness to both prevent and treat any side effects or incidents associated with the cosmetic procedures we offer.
Our injectors are trained to choose safe needle and cannula entry sites to avoid harm to unseen blood vessels or nerves.
Our injectors may use AI that studies your facial anatomy to guide them in injection site choices to give safe, consistent injections customized to you!
Furthermore, our injectors are skilled in the use of cannulas to use instead of needles whenever advisable to do so. Cannula use significantly reduces risks of bleeding and bruising, and the 22G cannulas our injectors use have never, to date, been associated with a vascular occlusion.
We have a list of Foods and Supplements that act as natural blood thinners that we recommend our patients avoid to (significantly) reduce their likelihood of bruising.
We also recommend use of arnica montana and red LED light therapy for quicker resolution of any bruising; cold packs and/or red+near-infrared light for quicker resolution of any swelling.
Are Face&Mane treatments performed by licensed medical professionals?
Yes! Face&Mane goes to great lengths to teach and test its injectors, all of whom are experienced, licensed medical professionals. Furthermore, continuing education in aesthetic procedures is both encouraged and required of all its injectors.
How do I know which treatment is right for my skin type or concern?
Relax! Your Face&Mane injector will examine your skin both visually and physically to assess it, review your medical history, and give science-based recommendations.
Is there downtime after a treatment?
It depends on the treatment. Tox (neurotoxin, “Botox”) and most filler treatments have zero downtime. The ultrasound with exosome hair loss treatment has zero downtime.
How soon will I see results of Filler and how long will they last?
It depends on the choice of filler as well as where it was placed. When a Hyaluronic Acid (HA) filler is used in the lips, it may last 6-15 months, depending on the specific choice of filler, exercise routine, and metabolism of the patient. The results are seen immediately, but become better over the course of the first week. When a Biostimulatory, Regenerative filler is chosen, it may last from 15 months to forever, depending on the product. Radiesse lasts 15-24 months; BellaFill lasts forever; Sculptra lasts 3-1/2 years. Results of Radiesse, BellaFill and DermaClae are seen immediately; results of Sculptra are seen starting in about 4 months from injection. Peak results of Radiesse are at 3-4 weeks; for BellaFill are at 6-8 months; and for Sculptra are at 8-12 months. Radiesse and BellaFill are injected with a cannula, while Sculptra is injected with a needle. The full amount needed of Radiesse and BellaFill can be injected in one session. The full amount needed for Sculptra must be injected over 3 sessions, each separated by 2-3 months. Face&Mane injectors are trained to recommend what is the best-overall choice for you.
Are the treatments painful or uncomfortable?
There is minimal-to-no pain or discomfort. Also, our injectors use anesthetic when it is safe to do so and will not affect the final outcome, and our injectors are taught pressure techniques and to use distracting vibration devices to minimize patient discomfort.
Can Face&Mane procedures be combined?
Absolutely!! Your time is precious, and there is seldom a reason you cannot combine the procedures we offer!! There are some recommendations we have, however, to ensure full efficacy and duration of a procedure, such as no facials or chemical peels or microneedling on the face for a week after Tox has been injected. Also, no dental work for at least a week after filler has been injected in the face. No microneedling of the scalp for at least a few days after an ultrasound treatment for hair loss (although this would be an unusual occurrence, considering clinical trials have shown clear superiority in results from ultrasound + exosomes vs microneedling +/- PRP).
How often should I come in for maintenance treatments?
For Tox (neurotoxins, “Botox”), return every 3-4 months. For Fillers, the time to return for more depends on the filler choice. For many hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, you usually need to return after about a year. For Radiesse, return in about 18 months. For BellaFill, you may need a small “topper” in about 6 years. For Sculptra, return in about 3-1/2 years. For hair loss treatment, you usually have some minor on-going care to do at home, like use minoxidil and/or exosomes plus shampoos and conditioners specifically formulated to enhance treatments +/- red light treatments, plus possible nutritional supplements…..and have a low-level ultrasound or microneedling procedure once every 6-12 months after finishing the initial series of 4 treatments over 6 months. For skincare improvement, maintenance can involve a daily or weekly routine with treatments delivered to you from Face&Mane once every 6-to-12 months.
Do I need a consult before having my treatment?
Yes, but it may be a short consult, depending on your concerns, and the treatment may be done the same day. Unless you are desiring a full face +/- neck +/- hair and scalp consultation, there will be no charge.
What should I do to prepare for my appointment?
First, make sure your medical history and allergies are up to date in your profile on the Face&Mane app. Second, make sure you have listed all the procedures or problem areas you want addressed by the Injector. Third, review the list of Foods and Supplements that are Natural Blood Thinners and have some arnica montana and/or red LED light therapy on hand to reduce risks of bruise. (This third step is especially important for fillers.) Fourth, complete the tasks on the PreTreatment Protocol for Face&Mane Patients (including having a clean space free of pets and distractions for the Injector to treat you). Fifth, relax!
Are there risks or side effects associated with Face&Mane treatments?
There are always risks associated with any medical treatment, but with the safeguards that Face&Mane has implemented (in its training and testing of injectors, and protocols for dealing with any side effects or incidents as well as strict adherence to rules by their Compliance Officer), you are in far safer hands than the vast majority of MedSpas.
What sort of results should I realistically expect—will I look “overdone”?
No worries! Our injectors are trained professionals and learn techniques to render natural looking, rejuvenating results. We want to enhance your features and make you look naturally younger and vibrant!
